5 books to understand watercolor
I’ve read dozens of books about watercolor but I have my favourites and I would like to share my short list with everyone who wants to evolve in watercolor art.
Painting Portraits and Figures in Watercolor
Mary Whyte
Lovely book with beautiful illustrations. For sure this book won’t teach you how to paint portraits as good as Mary Whyte, but still you can pick up some tips and practices. For me the greatest treasure of this book was a combination of paints that Whyte uses for human skin.
Watercolour Painting
Tom Hoffman
A nice guide to watercolor technology, the book observes all the essential principles of using the medium. It seems a bit complicated at a first glance but if you already tried to paint with watercolor and have questions and problems to solve, this book will be useful.
Terry Harrison's Complete Guide to Watercolour Landscapes
Terry Harrison
It's one of a number of Harrison‘s books and I find them all really useful though they sometimes repeat themselves. Here you can find lots of tips for outdoor painting, ideas of painting different textures and unusual techniques.
Jeanne Dobie
Making Color Sing
Great book for everyone who wants to build up their own watercolor palette and choose colors wisely. Jeanne Dobie teaches how to solve the problem of green, how to mix delicate gray colors and how to fix mistakes in watercolor.
Billy Showell's Botanical Painting in Watercolour
Billy Showell
It's one of a number of Harrison‘s books and I find them all really useful though they sometimes repeat themselves. Here you can find lots of tips for outdoor painting, ideas of painting different textures and unusual techniques.
